Human Trafficking of Children in the United States

Human trafficking of children is a grave issue that continues to plague the United States. It is a form of modern-day slavery, where children are exploited for labor or sexual purposes through force, fraud, or coercion. Despite increasing awareness, the crime often goes unnoticed due to its covert nature.

The Scale of the Problem

  • According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, in 2021 alone, over 10,359 human trafficking cases were reported, involving 16,554 victims, many of whom were minors.
  • The International Labor Organization estimates that 1 in 4 trafficking victims worldwide are children.
  • In states like Texas, reports estimate that 79,000 minors are victims of sex trafficking at any given time.

Who Are the Victims?

Traffickers often prey on vulnerabilities. Children in foster care, runaway or homeless youth, and those living in poverty are at a higher risk. Traffickers promise love, safety, or financial stability, using manipulation to gain control.

How to Protect Children

  • Educate them about trafficking and its signs.
  • Monitor their activities, especially online (where grooming often begins).
  • Report suspicious behavior or concerns to authorities, such as the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.

Hope Through Action
